Vanity Fair How would you describe where we find Jacqueline at the beginning of this season Whats her mental state Jane Krakowski Well, we pick up pretty much where we left off at the end of Season 2. Jacqueline is still with Russ David Cross when we pick up, although Russ is out of town at the time and leaving some of his duties in Jacquelines hands. I think what theyve really tried to do this year for Jacqueline is to teach her how to stand on her own two feet, which for Jacqueline is very hard for her because she has Barbie archesbut shes trying. LaughterDo you find yourself finding and exploring new sides of characters as the seasons of a series go on For sure. I have to say, I really think that Jacqueline is one of the characters that has had the most growth of any character Ive played over so few seasons. You know, I think something that was so wonderful about 3. Rocks Jenna Maroney was that she never learned any better. That was what was great about her, you know She was wrong all the time, and thats where she thrived. Her core stayed the same, and thats what was wonderful about her. And I think with Jacqueline, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and the amazing writers that we have are really trying to give all of these characters a lot of growth. Ive heard someone say about Season 3 that its a season about where the characters are going, and I thought that was interesting because thats not how a season is normally depicted or written. But it really is that. I think it really starts taking off after about Episode 8you really see where these characters are growing to, and where theyre going to go. I love where they take Jacqueline by the end of Season 3. Definitely Season 3 is a growth period for Jacqueline and, believe it or not, she has to get a J O B. Oh my God, for her thats like a death sentence. Its like a major life transformation. I dont want you to tell me, but I cant wait to find out what her choice is going to be. Its hilarious. It was funny, because I remember Tina Fey saying to me how much my character was going to grow this year and saying, Theres going to be a lot of changes in store. I said, All right, great. My first question was, But she stays rich, right Laughter For some reason, that was of utmost importance to the core of Jacqueline. I remember when Jacqueline was just the richest of all the rich, the Real Housewife of Real Housewivesand there really has been a shift from the beginning of the whole series. Huge. Huge. I mean, she went from the richest of the rich and married to the whole socialite world to being completely broke and divorced. And now she is sort of picking herself all the way back up again. Whats it like working with David Cross The relationship between Russ and Jacqueline is so twisted in this kind of amazing way. Well, Ive been a big fan of his for a really long time, so when I heard that they were getting him I was like, Wow, thats awesome. Im so happy to get to work with him. But I didnt see how the two characters were going to blend. Or, blend is not the right word, but. Jacqueline would ever fall for him, or what the twist in the story would be. I think we had such a natural comedy chemistry that it fell into place so easily with her first being repulsed by him, but then loving the repulsion. That dynamic has been really great to play. And by the end of this season, it takes a whole other enormous turn. There are a few political themed jokes this season, like the Trump University line that Jacqueline has in the first episode. Was there a conversation at all about how to address the current political climate through the show I think people are naturally going to think that were going to have more political content in the third season of Kimmy, due to the nature of Robert Carlock, and Tiny Fey, and the S. N. L. worldtheir history of writing whats happening in the world today. Because most of the season was written before the election happened, and we filmed almost three quarters before the election results came in. The timingand this is what Robert and Tina have saidthe timing just didnt work out for it to be a part of this season. In hindsight, you know, having known that Trump has won, there wouldve been many parallels to Kimmys experiences, through the election, that I think couldve been a great storyline for them. But the timing just didnt work out. Even they admitted that if they had written it in, they wouldve made the wrong assumption for the outcomeso they wouldve been stuck. I mean, what I think is wonderful about the political commentary through Season 3 is that its all character driven. They didnt have to make any assumptions about what was going to happen or what did happen. I mean, Jacqueline quotes Trump and The Art of the Deal. Its clear that she stands for that. I feel like Jacqueline and Trump have definitely crossed paths at some point in person. For sure, you know that. Its that world that theyre in. They would definitely all have been at the same galas with Anna Camps Deirdre Robespierre. But I think what works about it, and what will work over time if people go back and stream these shows over the years, is that the political jokes are all character driven, and not the writers assessment of what was the talk of that year, or that day, or that month. I also think the show is a lovely comedic respite. The news is changing so fast, and the political news is happening faster than any of us can keep up with.
